![]() This paper takes a critical approach to the global city concept from a Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) viewpoint. There is a “new form of organization of economic activity, with a central role in modifying the general conditions of accumulation, work and social reproduction” (Cuervo 2001, 119). This concept is based mainly on the growth of financial markets, the expansion of international trade in services, and new flows of foreign direct investment that modify the existing urban hierarchies (Sassen 2001, 2003, 2007a). The global city concept, introduced by Saskia Sassen in her book The Global City: New York, London, Tokyo, originally published in 1991 and developed in her later work, stimulated the proliferation of studies and research on multiple dimensions of the urban phenomenon.
